Why babies deserve a little extra care
CDC notes that infants who drink formula prepared with lead-contaminated tap water may be at higher risk because they drink a lot of water for their size. EPA estimates infants who mostly drink formula can get 40% to 60% of their lead exposure from drinking water.
Simple steps for Schiller Park parents
- Use cold tap water to make formula. Hot water can carry more lead.
- Run the tap after water has been sitting for hours before filling the bottle.
- If your service line is lead or unknown, or you just want peace of mind, use water from a filter certified to NSF/ANSI 53 for lead, or bottled water.
- Remember: boiling kills germs but does not remove lead.
During a water emergency
If local officials say tap water isn't safe, CDC says to use bottled water for formula until they say otherwise. Ready-to-feed liquid formula needs no water at all.
Schiller Park's posted inventory lists 100 lead, 453 unknown, and 4 galvanized-requiring-replacement service lines out of 3,005; 2,449 are non-lead. More on lead in Schiller Park.

Does boiling remove lead?
No. Boiling kills germs but does not remove lead. Use cold water and, if you're concerned about lead, a filter certified to NSF/ANSI 53 for lead or bottled water.
